Here’s An Opinion On:

When it comes time to rebuild your transmission, many people will either have a mechanic do it or simply replace the car if they bother to fix it at all, but there is a better way. If you have an older vehicle and the tools to do it, then you can rebuild your transmission. Most modern automatics are too complex for your average shade tree mechanic and require very expensive, specialized tools that serve one purpose and will never be used again. If, however, you do have an older vehicle and want to rebuild the transmission yourself then you should get a master rebuild kit.
What is a Master Rebuild Kit?
When you are rebuilding a transmission, there are many parts that must be replaced. Between the dozen or so gasket and seals, clutch packs, servos, and everything else it is easy to overlook something. These small, easily overlooked, parts can cause unneeded trips to the parts house and can delay your project. They will also end up nickel and diming you like you would not believe. A master rebuild kit comes with everything you will need and usually costs much less than buying each part individually.
Gaskets
Gaskets are thin pieces of material, usually either rubber, cork, paper, or silicone that acts as a seal between two metal parts. This helps to keep oil from leaking. The reason this is needed is because of the slight imperfections in the metal surface that will never allow it to have a perfect seal. A master rebuild kit comes with all of the gaskets you will need for your rebuild.
Clutch Packs
The next thing you will need that is included is the clutch packs. A good rebuild kit will include all new friction packs. A great kit will include friction packs as well as steel clutch plates. These plates are alternated, and cheaper kits will not have new steels. These can warp and bent over time, so always replace them if you can.
Small Parts
The kit will also come with a number of small parts including the filter. Some may even come with new servos, but this will depend on your transmission and kit.
Rebuilding your transmission is not an easy job, but if you have the tools and are up for the challenge, then it is a great way to improve your technical skills.
